Security Training for Seafarers with Designated Security Duties (STSDSD)

Course Description

The Security Training for Seafarers with Designated Security Duties (STSDSD) course meets the wants laid down in: Paragraphs 4 to six of Regulation VI/6, Paragraph 6 to eight of Section A-VI/6, and Table A-VI/6-2 of STCW Convention as amended in 2010. It also meets the extra criteria laid out in the STCW Convention, applicable to the difficulty of the certificate. The STSDSD course is conducted in accordance with the rules stipulated within the DGS STCW 2010 Training Circular no. 3 of 2013.

The candidate will understand current security threats to the maritime transportation industry such as Piracy and armed robbery, etc., and interfaces between ships and other modes. Familiarity with relevant international conventions, Security Plans, Assessments, etc. The course is hospitable to all seafarers who are to serve on board seagoing merchant ships. There are no particular educational requirements.

Aims and Objectives

Standard of competency for seafarers’ with designated security duties

  • Every seafarer who is designated to perform security duties, including anti-piracy and anti-armed-robbery-related activities, shall be required to demonstrate competence to undertake the tasks, duties and responsibilities listed in column 1 of table A-VI/6-2.
  • The level of knowledge of the subjects in column 2 of table A-VI/6-2 shall be sufficient to enable every candidate to perform on board designated security duties, including anti-piracy and anti-armed-robbery-related activities.
  • Every candidate for certification shall be required to provide evidence of having achieved the required standard of competence through.
  • Demonstration of competence to undertake the tasks, duties and responsibilities listed in column 1 of table A-VI/6-2, in accordance with the methods for demonstrating competence and the criteria for evaluating competence tabulated in columns 3 and 4 of that table.
  • Examination or continuous assessment as part of an approved training programme covering the material set out in column 2 of table A-VI/6-2.
  • Demonstration of competence to undertake the tasks, duties and responsibilities listed in column 1 of table A-VI/6-2, in accordance with the methods for demonstrating competence and the criteria for evaluating competence tabulated in columns 3 and 4 of that table.
  • Examination or continuous assessment as part of an approved training programme covering the material set out in column 2 of table A-VI/6-2
